"Obama Shop": Volunteering for a Campaign

Today was a first for me.  A friend of mine has put in hours volunteering for the Obama Campaign here in KC.  She invited me to join her today.  "Why not?", I thought.  So I went with her to the "Obama Shop".  That is what her 3 year old son calls it.   I went out on two rounds of canvassing and then did some phone calling.  I must admit I was way out of my comfort zone.  Yet, it is an experience I'll remember and I met some really amazing people.

I've never seen the inside of an election campaign.   People have sacrificed a great deal to get Obama elected.  I'm sure the same is true for McCain. People took off work to volunteer.  High Schoolers skipped school (OK, not a sacrifice for them).  A handful of folks practically lived at this "Obama Shop" for months. Phone calling and neighborhood canvasing will not cease until tomorrow night.  What will everyone do once the election is over?  Sleep for months! Today I learned I could get a free taxi ride to my polling place. Kind of cool but I think I'll walk.  Hours and hours of human labor have gone into getting people interested, informed and ready to vote.   I'll be glad when its all over, but maybe not as glad as some of the people I met today.  Tomorrow should be an electric day no matter what the outcome.
